Some desktops common problems & solution

DESKTOPS
# Problem Possible Solution
1 No video 1. Make sure the PC is getting power.
2. Swap monitor with a known working monitor.
3. Reseat memory (solves most no video issues).
2 5 beeps 1. Reseat the memory and restart.
2. If problem persists, try swapping with known working memory.
3 Red light on front of
PC (flashing or solid)
1. Check the power voltage switch on the back labeled 115/220.
Make certain the switch is set to 115.
2. Reset the memory.
3. If problem persists, most likely is a problem with the power supply
or processor and will need serviced by a hardware technician.
4 Non-system disk error 1. Check to make certain a floppy is not in the drive when booting.
2. Run IDE DPS Self Test from the BIOS:
a. Press F10 when booting, before Windows loads.
b. Choose English as the language.
c. Select the Storage tab.
d. Select IDE DPS Self-test
e. Select the hard drive and run.
i. Fails – submit ticket.
ii. Passes – reimage the computer.
* If you do not see an option for the IDE DPS Self Test on the Storage tab,
please indicate this in the ticket. It indicates a hard drive failure.
5 Physical memory
dump
1. Boot into safe mode (hit F8 before booting into Windows) and
update drivers.
2. Run the IDE DPS Self Test from the BIOS.
a. Fails – submit ticket.
b. Passes – reimage the computer.
6 Shutting down without
warning or notice
1. Check the power voltage switch on the back labeled 115/220.
Make certain the switch is set to 115.
2. Make certain the PC has room for airflow (not pressed against wall
or vents covered). PCs that overheat will often shut down when it
reaches an unsafe temperature
7 Constant Rebooting 1. Reimage the computer.
2. Boot into safe mode (hit F8 before booting into Windows) and
Disable Automatic Restart:
a. Once in safe mode, right-click on My Computer.
b. Choose Properties.
c. On the Advanced tab, click on Settings under the Startup
and Recovery section.
d. Uncheck the box for Automatically Restart under System
Failure.
e. Submit a ticket with blue screen error.
8 Computer will not
power on
1. Check the power voltage switch on the back labeled 115/220.
Make certain the switch is set to 115.
2. Swap the power cable with a known working power cable.
3. Press the power button and determine if there is tension. If not, the
power button might be loose under the front of the case.
9 Unsafe Internal
Temperature message
1. Blow the processor fan with canned air or vacuum to clear dust
from processor. Dust will cause the computer to overheat and it
will shutdown to prevent damage
